How to File an Insurance Claim for Your Freeda Wig

 

We’ve discussed how it may be likely that your insurance might pay for or contribute towards the price of your medically necessary wig.  Women and men who qualify for a wig, due to cancer or alopecia, often are surprised at the amount their insurance will cover.

 

 

 

 

In this blog we discuss how an insurance company may deny a claim for a wig reimbursement but the very same claim submitted for a cranial prosthesis is accepted, as is it considered medically essential.  We urge everyone to submit a claim to their insurance, even if you think it won’t be accepted, as the pressure on the insurance companies can perhaps help those in the future who need medical wigs.

 

 

 

Here’s a check list of the steps you should do when submitting receipts for insurance.

 

 

 

 

  • Get the prescription from your doctor for a cranial prosthesis along with a diagnosis code.
  • Use the procedure coding (usually A9282, S8095 or 99199)
  • Add the providers NPI number to the claim. The NPI number will be a 10 digit number that identifies your health care provider
  • Submit your receipt for your cranial prosthesis from the establishment where you purchased your wig. It is a special receipt that won’t include the word wig and will have our tax ID number on it
  • Have your doctor sign the insurance claim

While some love the instant volume and fullness that a wig offers, others feel more comfortable with a thinner wig especially when their hair wasn’t very full to begin with.

 

 

You may dismiss a wig solely because the wig feels and looks too thick, but if you love everything about it, there’s an easy fix to get that wig perfect for you.

 

 

Thinning out a wig won’t damage your wig, the hair or the life span of your wig. While a hair dresser might scissor thin a wig to remove some of the bulk, it often leaves behind little short hairs that spike up on the crown needing lots of attention to stay flat.

 

 

 

If you’d like to thin out a wig the process is very simple. All you need to do is ponytail the areas that are too thick for you. Our stylists will gently remove individual hairs in a systematic pattern leaving behind no bald spots or short spiky hairs. We also will send back any wefts we remove so you can have them in case you ever want to add the hair back.

So you’ve found the wig of your dreams and like any new relationship, you are getting to know each other.  You love the luscious hair, the skin like part, everything- then, after a few hours of wear you feel some tangling at the nape of the wig. Why is your high end wig tangling and what can you do about it?

 

 

 

It would seem that one of the reasons to invest in a high end wig is that there would be no knotting, but in fact the opposite is true. A good quality wig is more likely to experience some knotting (only at the nape). With a few tricks and a little know-how you’ll have it all under control.

 

 

First, let’s address the why. Why does a wig tangle?

 

 

 

 

 The scalp produces natural oils that keep hair from drying out and getting tangled, which explains why your wig knots and your hair may not. Another reason the wig will tangle wig is because a Freeda Wig is made of 100% Virgin European hair, which will have cuticles. Activity with the cuticles, humidity, and body heat can cause slight knotting. With care the cuticles lie flat and in the proper direction.

 

 

 

 Any activity that causes the cuticles to ruffle will increase the chance that the wig could tangle. Lots of friction from body heat, sweaters, collars, and scarves occur in the area of the neck, you’ll find that the nape area is where tangles most commonly occur.

 

 

 

Where do we start?

 

 

 

Step one would be a proper shampoo and conditioning on the hair. On one’s hair a scrubbing motion might be used but a wig needs different care, which is why we recommend that the wig be maintained by a professional if possible. Shampooing and conditioning on a wig should be more like a gentle combing through the hair followed by a gentle rinse.  Glide a comb or your fingers down the hair gently; this will cause the cuticles to be smooth preventing excess knotting. You’ll also want to use a quality shampoo and conditioner.

 

 

 

When the wig is damp you’ll want to do a complete comb through the hair to assure that the wig dries with no knots. At the end of the day you’ll want to remove all knots and tangles before you store the wig.

 

 

 

When using a blow dryer point it downward to smooth the cuticles in one direction. With time the cuticles eventually start to fit together and the knotting at the nape will subside. You can flat iron the nape to smooth the cuticles further.

All the time customers ask us how long their wig will last. At the same time we have customers who come in with wigs that are 10 years old or older for routine maintenance.  The care of your wig will determine its shelf life; here are some dos and don’ts to assist a long lasting wig that you’ll be happy to wear.

 

 

 

DO

  • Have a professional maintain your wig if possible; washing the wig incorrectly lends itself to lots of wear and tear on the wig
  • Protect  your wig from the sun
  • Use a wig stand for storage to keep the wig’s shape
  • Brush the knots out daily, but be careful not to damage or pull out the hair
  • Experiment with different methods of securing your wig , don’t wear a wigs that is uncomfortable
  • Use sprays and serums that will condition the hair but don’t let the conditioner get on the material of the wig, as the oils will loosen the knots

 

 

 

Don’t

  • Use tools that are too hot on your wig, but do feel comfortable to style your wig with a curling iron or blow drier just as you would style hair
  • Wear an ill-fitting wig, speak to your stylist if the cap feels too small or too big, a minor adjustment is an easy fix
  • Don’t wear your wig with wet hair underneath, it will loosen the knots and cause the hair to shed sooner
  • Don’t be scared to have the bangs and face framing layers, an unfinished cut will look very wiggy
  • Don’t wash your wig too often, think of it like a hat- you can wash it as little as once every 8 weeks or so
