Earlier this week a customer came in with a friend’s wig. It was many years old and had a threadbare crown.  While she couldn’t wear the wig she didn’t want it to be thrown away either. Her friend brought the wig to us to brainstorm on what we could do.

For under ten dollars and under ten minutes this was the result!

Here’s what we did:

We used a hair color spray, meant to temporarily retouch graying hair, and colored the big empty section that was missing hair.  Then we used brown eye liner and brushed it gently in select spots that were partially missing hair.

Next we moved the part over the slightest amount from left to right. That’s all we did, and now she has use of a wig that was previously unable to be worn.

6 Tips for Blow-drying Your Wig 

 

 

 

If you know a few tricks about blow drying your wig, the set will last longer and the hair will be smoother. Here are some tips to remember when styling your wig to achieve wig perfection.

 

 

 

–         Start with hair that is damp, and not very wet. For best results start blow drying the hair when it is about 65% dry.

 

–         To add lift to the roots use your hands to comb your roots upwards and blow-dry.

 

 

–         Use the largest round brush that you’re comfortable with, it will give the hair a smoother look.

 

–         Use a brush with nylon bristles or a traditional boar brush. This provides the most tension for the perfect pull.

 

–         Let your hair set. Allow the hair to cool down before moving on to the next section, it will give a longer lasting and smoother finish.

 

–          Use the nozzle. The nozzle concentrates the heat at the cuticle and gives the hair the smoothest finish.

Are cooling caps the solution to prevent hair loss during chemotherapy?

 

At Freeda we often have customers who come in to choose a wig after chemo, many of them expecting not to have needed a wig due to a cold cap used during treatment.

 

 

What is a Cold Cap?

 

A cold cap seemed to be the answer to one of the most feared side effects of treatment, hair loss. FDA approved since 2015, this device cools the scalp which prevents significant hair loss during chemotherapy treatment.  Much like a bathing cap the device is worn during chemo and for up to two hours after. Cooling the scalp slows down blood flow to the follicles during the chemotherapy, which limits delivery of chemotherapy to the scalp, reducing hair loss.

 

 

 

What is considered significant hair loss?

 

Studies show that those who use the cold have lost less than 50% of their hair. While this number is significant, the disappointment of that much hair loss can be devastating. Those assuming they wouldn’t need wigs, that the hair loss would be minimal, are finding this isn’t so.

 

While a cooling cap has its merit, the price tag, usually $3000 or so, is not typically covered by insurance.

 

Typical results will be loss of about 50% of hair. Majority of women will not experience prevention of complete hair loss. While the goal is to prevent the most visible effect of chemo, the amount of hair loss can be more devastating from one who was hopeful not to have any significant change.

 

 

 

To sum it up, a wig may be necessary even while using the cold cap. Knowing this will make the experience better while enjoying the benefits of the cold cap if you choose to use one.

Fall is finally here and the weather is changing. It’s important to know how to take care of your wig in the different types of weather. When the weather is windy the hair on the wig blows and can ruin a fresh set or even cause the hair to tangle, but don’t worry- it’s simple to take care of.

 

 

 

Next, you may have concerns that your wig will fly off your head with a gust of wind. If your wig is well fitted and secured properly the odds of that occurring are small.

 

 

 

Avoiding Tangles

 

 

Wearing a scarf or a hood are simple fixes for both these concerns. If you don’t often wear coats with a hood a scarf can be folded up and take little space in your pocket or your purse.

 

 

A baseball cap with the hair tied back is also an option that will provide security and keep the hair protected from tangles. You don’t need to wear the baseball cap, simply tying the hair back will offer the hair protection. You can use a looser hair tie if you are concerned about the ponytail holder leaving marks or indents on the wig.

 

 

 Does the Wig Fit Well?

 

 

Be sure the wig fits you well, before you address the type of clips, combs or adhesives you might use to keep the wig secure. At Freeda we do customized fittings or we can add adjustable elastics to tighten or loosen the wig. This is especially helpful if you prefer a looser fit but want more security when outside in the wind.

 

 

Securing Your Wig
We’ve talked at length about the different methods for securing your wig. Clips and combs may be best for those with hair underneath the wig, those without might use wig glue or tape. We are big fans of the Freeda Band that provide security without any clips, combs, glue or tape.

You’ve been wearing your wig and you love it. You hear about rooting your wig or adding roots and are interested in trying it.

 

 

What are roots?

 

 

Roots are darker color added to the hair by the crown to mimic the look of what your hair looks like about two weeks after you’ve had it colored. It especially looks natural on a wig where the hair won’t grow. It’s another way that no one will guess that you’re wearing a wig.

 

 

Roots can be just a quarter inch long or they can be as long as a few inches. Adding dye to your wig is permanent. Maybe it’s not a look you want to wear daily or maybe you’re concerned that you might not like it and don’t want to commit to something so final.

 

 

Would you believe we have a hack for this one?

This trick will cost just a few dollars, and it’s something you can do it yourself. If you don’t like it and it’s not your style, just wash it right out.

 

 

Have you heard of a touch up stick? A touch up stick is crayon-like, created to color on your hair if you need to cover grays but don’t have time to get to a salon. All you need to do is simply buy a touch up stick that is darker than your wig. Color the roots of your wig for instant wig change that you can do on your own.

How to File an Insurance Claim for Your Freeda Wig

 

We’ve discussed how it may be likely that your insurance might pay for or contribute towards the price of your medically necessary wig.  Women and men who qualify for a wig, due to cancer or alopecia, often are surprised at the amount their insurance will cover.

 

 

 

 

In this blog we discuss how an insurance company may deny a claim for a wig reimbursement but the very same claim submitted for a cranial prosthesis is accepted, as is it considered medically essential.  We urge everyone to submit a claim to their insurance, even if you think it won’t be accepted, as the pressure on the insurance companies can perhaps help those in the future who need medical wigs.

 

 

 

Here’s a check list of the steps you should do when submitting receipts for insurance.

 

 

 

 

  • Get the prescription from your doctor for a cranial prosthesis along with a diagnosis code.
  • Use the procedure coding (usually A9282, S8095 or 99199)
  • Add the providers NPI number to the claim. The NPI number will be a 10 digit number that identifies your health care provider
  • Submit your receipt for your cranial prosthesis from the establishment where you purchased your wig. It is a special receipt that won’t include the word wig and will have our tax ID number on it
  • Have your doctor sign the insurance claim

We’ve discussed swimming in your Freeda wig  and how to stay cool in the summer, but what about dealing with the effect the humidity and heat that your human hair wig might react to.  Over and over you’ll hear about Virgin European wigs being the best quality hair – and it is, but just like hair it will react to the humidity.

 

 

 

 

Prepare Your Wig

Before going outside, you can prepare the hair in anticipation for the weather. Have your stylist use a stronger conditioner and shine sprays meant to fight frizz. You may find no issue with the weather and your wig.

 

 

 

 

Dealing with Humidity after the Fact

If your wig has lots of texture (which is great for a style with lots of body), you may find the hair gets flyaway hairs or some frizz when you’re spending time outdoors. Using a serum with silicon or Moroccan oil will help tame the hair.

Tip: If you get stuck in the middle of the day with no products take a little moisturizer and rub it into your hands. Glide your hands over the wig for an instant solution.

 

 

 

 

Pull it into a Braid

Braiding the hair will help the wig avoid the effects of the humidity. You can pull out the braid when you get indoors.

 

 

 

A Relaxer

Silky hair reacts less to the humidity than hair with body. Often we will have customers that will ask for a deep conditioning treatment or a Keratin treatment right before the summer.

 

 

 

 

Chlorine and Salt

Summer and swimming go hand in hand. Chlorine and salt aren’t great for the hair and can add dryness , but a little exposure isn’t a problem. You can swim in the wig as long as you’re careful to rinse the wig out well as soon as you are done.

 

 

 

 

A Second Wig

It’s always a good idea to have two wigs and it can be especially helpful in the summer.  If your wig’s style has drooped and needs a pick me up you’ll have your second wig to fall back on.
