Are Wig Caps Necessary

Are Wig Caps Necessary

Like many aspects of wearing a wig many things will be about personal preference. There are no set rules when it comes to wearing wigs. But you’ll want do whatever is necessary to feel as comfortable as possible when wearing a wig. Sometimes that will mean wearing a wig cap under a wig.

Very much like a bathing cap, a wig cap is a mesh or netting that is worn under the wig.  There are many reasons one might choose to wear a wig cap.

PROS

-Security – it can help prevent the wig from slipping or moving around.

-Wearing a wig cap keeps the hair underneath the cap flat and evenly distributed and contained under the wig.

-Comfort – A wig cap can help protect a sensitive scalp from itching or irritation.

-Sweating- A cap is a good idea if one sweats excessively when wearing a wig. Since you’ll want to wash your wig as infrequently as possible you can wash the wig cap and avoid having to wash the wig unnecessarily.

If you have no hair you may want to purchase a wig cap in the same color as your hair verses a nude tone- this helps avoid seeing bald spots if the hair moves and exposes the net.

CONS

  • -It can feel restrictive and cause the wearer to overheat.
  • -Some feel the wig cap adds pressure and gives them a headache.
  • -Some find that it causes itching.

The choice to wear a wig cap will come down to whether or not it feels more comfortable for you.

If you decide to wear a wig cap here is how to put it on your head.

  1. 1. If you have hair- gather it in a low ponytail at the base of your neck. If you have a lot of hair you may want to gather it into two ponytails on the sides.
  2. 2.Put the cap on so that it rests on your natural hairline. It should sit behind the ears and rest at the base of the neck.
  3. 3.Tuck any hair that may have escaped underneath the cap.
  4. 4.Move and adjust the cap until you feel comfortable.

If you are comfortable you’re more likely to feel confident wearing your wig, and while a wig cap is optional , confidence is definitely a must when putting on your wig.

Twisted Balayage

Twisted Balayage

Some trends and styles are classic and last through decades (think the bob). Color trends can vary greatly and be popular for a short time (think very chunky and contrasting highlights).

Some trends are so pleasing that they last years and years. Balayage is a trend that is having a long run. Balayage has been around since the 70s but because increasingly popular in 2008. The updated version this season is called twisted balayage which is a new spin on this ongoing trend.

Twisted balayage is just like it sounds. The technique: The stylist will section the hair, twist the ends and apply the highlight color. The color will be less concentrated and more natural, as if you had been in the sun.

Twisted balayage looks great in richer and warmer shades like cinnamon and hazelnut colors.

Are you thinking of leaving the ashy trend behind and embracing warmer shades? We are! See our 30/6/8 for a medium to light brown color with warm highlights, or 33/6.

Are You Wearing A Wig?

How to Deal With THAT Question- Are You Wearing a Wig?

There are so many emotions, things to learn and a whole new experience when you first start wearing a wig. You’ll think about telling people, who you might tell and whether you want to keep the information private.  Whether you decide keep this information private or feel confident about sharing it is up to you and there’s no right way.

While most know that it’s impolite to ask certain questions there are those that may cross that line. It’s a good idea to think about how you might answer that question so you aren’t caught off guard.

“That question” can be “Are you wearing a wig?”, “Is that your hair”, or you may even feel taken aback from just any comment about your hair.

If you feel like you want to keep the information private you’re under no obligation to explain that you’re wearing a wig even if someone asks. Customers tell us that they feel bad accepting a compliment when someone says “your hair is so beautiful” or comments about how thick it is and such. Don’t feel bad! Your wig looks beautiful!

If someone asks you directly if it’s your hair don’t feel bad saying yes. It IS your hair. You purchased it and it’s yours.

There is no shame in wearing a wig. Answering “I am” when someone asks you can be empowering.  Because wearing a wig is a private matter it’s often stigmatized. When someone answers proudly it can take away the stigma that wearing a wig often has. It can also be an opportunity to educate someone on the sensitivity one should have when asking someone that question.

How do you deal with this question when you choose to keep your wig wearing a private matter? Let us know if you have an experience to share with our community.

Caring For Your Wig During The Winter Season

Caring For Your Wig During The Winter Season

During winter months your wig will likely need special care through the freezing temperatures, and bundles of winter gear.  The lack of moisture in the air during this weather can also cause the hair to be dry.

Here are some tips to keep your wig in tip top shape.

Deep Condition Your Wig

Your scalp excretes oils that moisturize and protects your hair. Since your wig doesn’t do that it’s important to use a good conditioner when you wash your wig.  You might consider a deep conditioning treatment during colder weather as the lack of moisture in the air causes dryness.

Limit Use of Heat

Limit your use of heating tools like curling irons, flat irons, hot rollers, and hair dryers as much as you can. Heating tools extract moisture from the hair so airdrying your wig, cold rollers, and using heat tools sparingly will benefit the hair.

Completely Dry Your Tresses

Don’t go outdoors if your wig is damp, make sure it’s completely dry. Cold weather can cause the hair to become brittle and breakable which causes split ends.

Untangle Your Wig

You’ll want to tend to tangles and knots as they happen. Every night you should comb the hair gently to ensure the hair is tangle free. Always use a light touch when you comb the hair, or even when removing clips, bobby pins, or ponytail holders.

.

With gentle care your wig will last beautifully and remain healthy for a long time.

The most popular hairstyles from the last 100 years

The most popular hairstyles from the last 100 years

As we welcome 2020 we take a look at the hairstyles from the last 10 decades. Some are classic styles, some were quick trends.

1920s

Bobbed hairstyles became popular. Longer hair was cut short and pulled back with ringlets.

1930s

In this decade actress Jean Harlow popularized the long sleek shoulder length wavy hair.

1940s

These rolled styles called Victory rolls were very stylish in the 40’s.

1950s

Pixie cuts and other short styles became popular (see our Linda wig if you like this style).  The photo on the right shows Freeda in this style styling a wig for a customer.

1960s

Hairstyles started to get more extravagant and full of volume on the crown. Bouffants, beehives and teased hair were really popular.

The photo below is of Freeda and her family with very stylish hairstyles. Some of the women in the photo are wearing wigs.

1970’s

The styles leaned toward more natural styles. Hair was worn long and low maintenance.

1980’s

Hairstyles were generally big, sprayed with lots of hairspray, teased and voluminous. Tight curls or permed hair had a moment. Mullets were also stylish at this time.

1990’s

The “Rachel” was hugely popular at this time which was the inspiration for our “Friends” wig.

2000’s

Super long tresses and big waves were popular during this time.

2010’s

Natural tousled hair became a go to style. Lobs were all the rage as well.

What styles are to come for 2020? Which will be short-lived and which will trend for a while?

My Mimi Wig – A Unique Customer Profile

My Mimi Wig – A Unique Customer Profile

We are always happy when our clients share their experience of wearing a wig with us. People would be surprised at the many reasons people choose to wear wigs. This one client loves his wig and his story is unique. In his own words, this is his experience.

“I am a military reenactor (living history) portraying a 17th century Spanish Army soldier at a local National Monument in St Augustine, Florida.   My outfit – it is civilian attire/guy fashion for 17th century European men as uniforms for most countries were not adopted until the late 1600s.

As a history professor, I wanted to ensure that everything that I wear is as authentic as is humanly possible and while I had no problems with the clothing, accouterments and weapons, being bald prevented me from having the proper hairstyle. In those times even bald men wore their long below the shoulder back then which is something that I do draw the line with.   As such, I turned to women’s wigs to replicate the proper, historically accurate male hairstyle of the day which was long and parted down the middle.  Given that I fire matchlock black powder weapons, I cannot use synthetic wigs and must wear human hair.

After doing some research, I opted for Freeda’s Mimi in 27/27/30.  Over the past few weeks I’ve engaged with literally hundreds of visitors and all – especially the women who almost always ask – believe that this is my real hair – NOBODY has ever claimed that it’s a wig!  All of them have commented that the natural wave pattern is “absolutely beautiful” and how lucky I am to have such great hair – something I can readily agree to!  Thank you Freeda!”

Thank you for sharing your story. We’d love to share more stories about why you wear a wig.  We welcome you to share your story with us by emailing us at info@freeda.com

The Back Of Your Wig

How Natural Does the Back of Your Wig Look?

We often don’t think about the back of our wig and how natural it looks. However the shape of the wig determines how natural your wig will appear.

Your wig will look most natural if the cap of the wig molds closely to the shape of your head.

The Steps:

  • First you’ll make sure the wig fits well.
  • Next you’ll make sure your hair underneath is pinned flat with no bumps.

This last tip will help the cap mold closely to the shape of your head and make the wig look like the hair is growing out of your head.

  • First you’ll place the wig on your head then instead of sectioning off the hair to set it up for styling you’ll leave the hair down.
  • Using a blow drier you will  heat up the cap
  • With the blow drier’s nozzle touching the crown run the blow drier  downward over the sides of the wig
  • Don’t forget the back the of head

As the cap heats up it will conform to the shape of the head allowing for the most natural look.

Holiday Styles for your Wig

As the holidays approach the festive feeling in the air might have you looking for ways to glam up your wig. Here are some easy ways to dress your wig up.

Twisted back hairstyle

Any style where the hair is twisted back will look elegant. This look is particularly attractive when the hair is half up and half down. Curl your hair with a large barrel curling iron and use  clear elastics to secure the hair after you’ve twisted it back away from your face.

Glamorous Vintage Waves

Channel old Hollywood glamour with a vintage feel. These aren’t the typical waves you see. What makes them different is that the curl is inward toward the face.  Add a sparkly pin for extra glamour.

Twisted Bun

For more formal events a twisted bun will fit the bill. Twist the hair into a bun and use bobby pins to secure into place. Pull some loose strands around the face and tease the crown for volume.

Color Trend- Chocolate Cake

Color Trends for 2020

Lately many people have been talking about a new color trend called “chocolate cake’. Chocolate cake! How fun! Even for those counting carbs, chocolate cake is a trend everyone can get behind.

Chocolate Cake hair is a deep chocolaty color with vibrant tones. The highlights are painted throughout the hair to bring out brightness in the eyes and skin. This trend is different than the ashier and blonde highlights that have been so popular. This hair color has no blonde tones, just varying deep brown tones.

Just like a good chocolate cake, this color is very rich. Think about the different brown colors in a chocolate cake, frosting and filling. This color is layers of chocolate brown balayaged to bring out depths of shades, while achieving a natural, multifaceted, color. This is a very versatile look for your wig. Try it with shades that are within two levels of the base color
