Twisted Balayage

Twisted Balayage

Some trends and styles are classic and last through decades (think the bob). Color trends can vary greatly and be popular for a short time (think very chunky and contrasting highlights).

Some trends are so pleasing that they last years and years. Balayage is a trend that is having a long run. Balayage has been around since the 70s but because increasingly popular in 2008. The updated version this season is called twisted balayage which is a new spin on this ongoing trend.

Twisted balayage is just like it sounds. The technique: The stylist will section the hair, twist the ends and apply the highlight color. The color will be less concentrated and more natural, as if you had been in the sun.

Twisted balayage looks great in richer and warmer shades like cinnamon and hazelnut colors.

Are you thinking of leaving the ashy trend behind and embracing warmer shades? We are! See our 30/6/8 for a medium to light brown color with warm highlights, or 33/6.

The most popular hairstyles from the last 100 years

The most popular hairstyles from the last 100 years

As we welcome 2020 we take a look at the hairstyles from the last 10 decades. Some are classic styles, some were quick trends.

1920s

Bobbed hairstyles became popular. Longer hair was cut short and pulled back with ringlets.

1930s

In this decade actress Jean Harlow popularized the long sleek shoulder length wavy hair.

1940s

These rolled styles called Victory rolls were very stylish in the 40’s.

1950s

Pixie cuts and other short styles became popular (see our Linda wig if you like this style).  The photo on the right shows Freeda in this style styling a wig for a customer.

1960s

Hairstyles started to get more extravagant and full of volume on the crown. Bouffants, beehives and teased hair were really popular.

The photo below is of Freeda and her family with very stylish hairstyles. Some of the women in the photo are wearing wigs.

1970’s

The styles leaned toward more natural styles. Hair was worn long and low maintenance.

1980’s

Hairstyles were generally big, sprayed with lots of hairspray, teased and voluminous. Tight curls or permed hair had a moment. Mullets were also stylish at this time.

1990’s

The “Rachel” was hugely popular at this time which was the inspiration for our “Friends” wig.

2000’s

Super long tresses and big waves were popular during this time.

2010’s

Natural tousled hair became a go to style. Lobs were all the rage as well.

What styles are to come for 2020? Which will be short-lived and which will trend for a while?

My Mimi Wig – A Unique Customer Profile

My Mimi Wig – A Unique Customer Profile

We are always happy when our clients share their experience of wearing a wig with us. People would be surprised at the many reasons people choose to wear wigs. This one client loves his wig and his story is unique. In his own words, this is his experience.

“I am a military reenactor (living history) portraying a 17th century Spanish Army soldier at a local National Monument in St Augustine, Florida.   My outfit – it is civilian attire/guy fashion for 17th century European men as uniforms for most countries were not adopted until the late 1600s.

As a history professor, I wanted to ensure that everything that I wear is as authentic as is humanly possible and while I had no problems with the clothing, accouterments and weapons, being bald prevented me from having the proper hairstyle. In those times even bald men wore their long below the shoulder back then which is something that I do draw the line with.   As such, I turned to women’s wigs to replicate the proper, historically accurate male hairstyle of the day which was long and parted down the middle.  Given that I fire matchlock black powder weapons, I cannot use synthetic wigs and must wear human hair.

After doing some research, I opted for Freeda’s Mimi in 27/27/30.  Over the past few weeks I’ve engaged with literally hundreds of visitors and all – especially the women who almost always ask – believe that this is my real hair – NOBODY has ever claimed that it’s a wig!  All of them have commented that the natural wave pattern is “absolutely beautiful” and how lucky I am to have such great hair – something I can readily agree to!  Thank you Freeda!”

Thank you for sharing your story. We’d love to share more stories about why you wear a wig.  We welcome you to share your story with us by emailing us at info@freeda.com

Color Trend- Chocolate Cake

Color Trends for 2020

Lately many people have been talking about a new color trend called “chocolate cake’. Chocolate cake! How fun! Even for those counting carbs, chocolate cake is a trend everyone can get behind.

Chocolate Cake hair is a deep chocolaty color with vibrant tones. The highlights are painted throughout the hair to bring out brightness in the eyes and skin. This trend is different than the ashier and blonde highlights that have been so popular. This hair color has no blonde tones, just varying deep brown tones.

Just like a good chocolate cake, this color is very rich. Think about the different brown colors in a chocolate cake, frosting and filling. This color is layers of chocolate brown balayaged to bring out depths of shades, while achieving a natural, multifaceted, color. This is a very versatile look for your wig. Try it with shades that are within two levels of the base color

Hair Color Trends this Fall-Dirty Brunette

Have you heard “dirty brunette”? We’ve all heard of the color dirty blonde. Dirty blonde is a medium blonde color with hints of darker tones.  This newest trend is very popular and works beautifully on Freeda Wigs. Dirty brunette is a hue that is neither ashy nor reddish; it’s a natural-looking brunette color that features dark blonde pieces in neutral tones.

This color is flattering on everyone because the neutral tones compliment both ashy and reddish tones. Dirty Brunette is a neutral, smoky shade which compliments both blue and brown eyes and all different skin colors, making it a trend that anyone can try.

Brunettes sometimes feel that once they add highlights to their wig it appears too blonde and they lose the brown look. Dirty Brunette is the perfect color for someone who wants to have brown hair with highlights but doesn’t want a wig that looks too blonde.

Dirty brunette is created by placing darker blonde highlights throughout a brown wig. If you’d like to try this flattering trend, you can try our color 10/6 or color 8/4. You can also add highlights to any brown wig to create this look. Our wigs are 100% virgin European hair and take color beautifully.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COMBS

All About combs

There are many types of combs and using the right comb will help you get your wig to the style you like. Our easy guide will educate you on what comb is best for your wig.

If you are combing your wig when it is wet you’ll want use a wide tooth comb to get out tangles. A fine toothed comb can cause more pulling and can cause hair on the wig to fall out. A wide tooth comb is gentler on the hair and is a better choice on wet hair.

Your wig you may need a more precise part and a fine tooth comb is the tool to use. Use this to finish up and perfect your wig’s part.

A RAT TAIL COMB

A rat tail is more than just a comb with a handle. A rat tail comb is pivotal for your wig if you are changing your part. The rat tail comb is the one that gets the wig’s parting straight.  If you are changing the part from down the middle or to one side or just perfecting your usual part you’ll need the rat tail comb. Use the handle of the “rat tail” to run across the area of the wig that you wish to part.

TEASING COMB

A teasing comb is a comb designed to achieve volume and height by backcombing the hair. It is also used in updos the require lift. It has three or four rows of teeth with varying lengths.

To use the comb, simply pick up the hair and hold it up straight and taut. Then, just run the teasing comb down the stands a few times. You can add as much volume and body as you’d like by repeating the steps. To style your wig with more volume use smaller amounts of hair and increase the amount of strokes with the comb.

Everything You Need To Know About Brushes

Everything You Need To Know About Brushes

The Paddle Brush

The paddle brush is an all in one brush. It’s good for many things.

You can use it to detangle and brush your wig before styling it, you can you use it to blow dry and tease the wig.

Try one with round nylon bristles and a padded air cushion.

The Natural Boar Round Brush

The round brush helps tame more textured hair and smooth fly aways. It creates soft waves while adding sheen and bounce to the hair. The round brush comes in varying sizes. For a tighter wave use a smaller sized brush, as well as if your hair is shorter. A smaller brush is also great for blow drying bangs.  A larger brush is good for a subtle wave and creating big volume and body.

The Metal Round Brush

The metal brush will heat and will lock in curls more easily. It’s also good for blowing the hair with the ends curled in or out. Most will have vents to allow a smooth airflow which will allow the hair to dry quickly and evenly. You’ll want to use the dryer on a lower setting to avoid the hair heating up too hot.

A Mixed Round Brush

A mixed brush will have both boar and nylon bristles. It gives you a little more tension than a metal brush. This brush is good for smoothing the hair and for creating volume.

A Teasing Brush

A teasing brush is the best way to give lift to your roots. You can use it to tease the wig for volume. A teasing brush will add texture which is also good for creating updos. Be careful not to cause breakage to the hair when using the teasing brush.

How to Use a Flat Iron on Your Wig

Here are Step-by-step instructions for using straightner.

You will need:

  • A wig head
  • T-pins
  • A table clamp or tripod
  • Claw style hair clips
  • Hair spray and heat protectant spray
  • A comb or brush

A tourmaline or ceramic iron is a good option; it heats up evenly and reduces frizz.

Wash Your Wig

Start with clean hair. Use shampoo and conditioner for sleek and smooth hair. While the hair is still damp use a heat protectant as well as mousse for volume. Gently comb the product through the hair.

Dry the Wig

It’s best to air dry the wig if you can to avoid more heat on the hair. However, you may blow-dry the hair if needed.  Blow- dry the hair once it is halfway dry. The hair should be completely dry before you start using your iron. Comb or brush the hair so it is free of knots.

When the hair is completely dry you are ready to start.

Prepare the Iron

Turn on the iron and adjust the heat setting. The thicker and more texture the hair has the higher the temperature should be. If your wig has thinner and sleeker hair you’ll want the lowest setting to avoid burning the hair.  There will also be a numbered heat setting near the switch that you can adjust to your desired heat level. Always set your straightener to the lowest temperature to avoid damaging your hair.

Separate your hair sections

Pin the wig securely on a wig head. Separate the hair into sections. A thicker wig should be separated into more sections. You’ll want to make the sections thick enough so they easily pass through the plates of the straightener. Clip the sections you are not using out of the way.

Pull the Hair Taut

You’ll want to avoid passing the hair through the iron more times than necessary. Place the straigtener as close to the roots as possible .If you straighten the roots at the same time you’ll be able to avoid unnecessary heat on the wig.  Pull the hair taut. You’ll want to create enough tension to let the iron glide easily through the hair but not too taut to create hair damage. In one hand use a comb to pull the hair taut and in the other hand run the straightner down the hair.

Finishing Off the Wig

To prevent the hair from frizzing you should use a light hairspray and mist over the hair. Wait until the hair cools down completely and brush through your wig. Spray the wig with hairspray then finish up with a quick comb through once again.

Clean the Iron’s Plates

As you use the iron buildup on the iron will occur. Buildup will cause the plates to heat up unevenly. Use a damp cloth to clean the plates to keep the iron in good condition.

Fighting Dry Hair in the Summer Months

Sun can cause hair damage and dryness. This is because heat and sun oxidize the wig, leaving the beautiful hair dry.  It can be hard to always keep the hair protected in summer months. It means not forgetting sunscreen spray for hair, keeping a hat with you and avoiding the sun.

If you find that your wig has experienced sun damage and dryness, don’t despair. An easy solution is available to fix damage for sun may have caused. You might think the solution lies in harsh chemicals and abrasive treatments.

The opposite is true, Freeda uses a treatment that rejuvenates the hair and shields its cuticles. It adds softness and high shine to the hair. It strengthens the hair and prevents hair breakage and split ends. It also moisturizes the hair which decreases typical knotting. It builds and strengthens the hair after other chemical treatments like perms and hair color treatments.

This treatment is called Magic Sleek. (If you rather not reveal the treatment I can leave it out)

While other salons use keratin treatments which contain formaldehyde and a cocktail of other hard to pronounce chemicals, this treatment uses none. This treatment uses tannin, amino acids and natural argon oil. This treatment is uniquely different than the others it is completely safe to use on all hair types and textures.

This treatment will last through hundreds of washings, yet it’s gentle enough to do whenever you feel your hair needs a boost.

If you’re feeling dryness after the summer months or for any reason at all call us at Freeda’s and arrange for this deep conditioning treatment.
