Curly Wigs that “Wash and Wear”

Curly Wigs that “Wash and Wear”

Wearing a wig in a natural air-dried manner is a popular growing trend. Our Maya, Danya, Mimi, Atara and Pearl all dry naturally with a wave or a curl.

Here are our best tips for wearing curly or wavy air-dried styles.

Air-dry the wig on an angle

You’ll have to get a wig clamp for this, but the results will be worth it. Drying the wig on an angle will allow the curl open up more, resulting in a bouncier curl.

Air-dry the wig upside down

To create a look with lots of volume pin the damp wig on a head with the nape on the top and the crown on the bottom. You can also hang the wig on a hook with the up side of the wig down. Air-dry the wig completely upside down for a full style with abundant volume. This tip works well on a straight wig as well as on a dry wig.

The products that worked best on your hair are the ones you’ll be naturally drawn to. There may be better products for your wig. Experiment with the many products on the market for waves and curls. Our Freeda stylist can recommend the best products to use based on the look you want to achieve.

Freeda Wigs Dry Shampoo Experiment

Freeda Wigs Dry Shampoo Experiment

I love dry shampoo. I maintain that is the one styling product that delivers its promises and even more. It’s intended to refresh and revive hair without water, and it does the job well. I use dry shampoo for so many other reasons. I use it as hairspray and find it holds hair so well. I use it to give thin hair texture. I use it to extend the time between wig washes, or if I get caught in the rain. Those who exercise in their wigs find it’s a perfect refresher when used afterwards.

How it works:

1)      Spray the shampoo about 8-12” away from hair

2)      Massage through the roots

3)      Brush through for hair that has freshness and body

At Freeda we experimented with different dry shampoos using steps 1-3 to see which one stacked up the highest.

First up was Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo

dryshamblog

This formula was safe on color treated hair (and yes, your dry shampoo should be color safe just as your regular shampoo should be if your wig is color treated).  The price was also a standout at less than $5 a bottle. When we used it to add texture to a wig styled with tight waves the set loosened significantly but it held well for a long time without needing to be retouched. We didn’t see this issue when we used less of the product on the hair. Spraying too close to the wig left a white residue that was harder to get out with regular brushing.

Overall, it works well, and absorbed oil.  It had a clean fresh scent that didn’t smell like chemicals. The shampoo didn’t weigh down the style when the appropriate amount was used. The shampoo added texture and reduced the fly-aways.  Some felt the spray left the hair a little dull looking. The consensus in the office was positive and the stylists liked how much body it gave the wigs.

Next we tried Dove Refresh and Care Volume and Fullness Dry Shampoo   dryshamp

This shampoo was also under $5. This didn’t get the rave reviews like the others. The stylists felt that the spray smelled like chemicals and wasn’t very pleasant. On the thinner wigs this spray worked best if the hair was gently separated after it was sprayed rather than brushed or massaged through, it also needed a few more minutes to sit on the head.

Overall, this spray was very good for adding texture, but not as good at refreshing the hair and didn’t work as well at stretching the time between washes. One of the stylists liked this shampoo over the Suave shampoo.

Final Grade-8/10

Next up was Aussie Total miracle Collection Dry Shampoo     dryshampoThis shampoo was pricier than the others but still under $10. All the stylists agreed that this was the best smelling shampoo.  It wasn’t a favorite among the stylists who felt it left a sticky feeling in the hair.  We used it to spray just the roots of the wig and that gave it nice height and volume.

Overall it wasn’t the product that our stylists wanted to use again.

Final Grade 6/10

Batiste Original Dry Shampoo   dryshampoo

This seemed like a winner here in the Freeda salon. The stylists felt that it left the least residue of all the others. It was slightly more expensive than the others, at just over $10. It gave the hair nice texture; it absorbed the oil well and didn’t have a lingering smell. This dry shampoo felt the most like freshly washed hair, and the residue left behind was minimal.

I specifically loved this dry shampoo and it really saved me from a particularly bad hair day. My hair was looking flat and limp (the kind of day that requires hiding under a hat) and I would have been happy for my hair to be upgraded from poor to acceptable. After using the Batiste spray I loved how my hair looked and found myself having an extra great hair day.

Final Grade-10/10

It seemed with all the sprays that less was more. Using smaller amounts of the product did a better job than spraying lots of dry shampoo all over the hair. Waiting a few minutes between spraying and styling also yielded better results. It’s also really important to shake the bottle well before spraying and will make a big difference in the results.

At the end the Batiste ranked the highest but the Suave brand was a really close second. Dry shampoo is now been upgraded at our salon to a product we can’t live without.

How to Wash A Wig

HOW TO WASH A WIG

At Freeda we always recommended that a professional should maintain your wig.  A professional will make sure that the way the wig is washed or set won’t compromise on the longevity or quality of the wig.

In a pinch it is okay to wash your own wig while being very careful. Here are the steps to follow.

Step 1: Gently comb out the wig, being gentle with any knots. Always brush the hair from the bottom, removing any knots, than working your way higher up towards the top.

Step 2:  Rinse the wig by holding it under a stream of lukewarm water. Rinse from roots to ends.

Step 3:  Using a quality shampoo distribute evenly over the hair, roots to ends. Gently massage the shampoo through the strands.  Turn the wig inside out and gently wash the inside of the cab. Step 4: Rinse the shampoo in lukewarm water.

Step 5: Comb conditioner into the hair avoiding the root. (The oils in the conditioner loosen the knots and glue, so you always want to avoid putting conditioners, serums and treatments on the root.) You may leave in the conditioner for a few minutes if desired.

Step 6: Rinse the conditioner in a downwards motion, making sure no trace of conditioner remains.

  Step 7: Squeeze out excess
water, then towel blot the hair to dry.

Step 8: While wig is damp comb through the hair, making sure the part it in its proper place.

Step 9:Place the wig on a wig head, or a dome shaped surface to dry.

Fashion Week Hair Spring 2017

Fashion Week Hair Spring 2017

As hair and fashion go hand in hand, we wait with alacrity for Fashion Week. Come September we

eagerly scan the runways for the latest hair trends, some are wild some are sweet. Here are some

of the standouts.

Tibi had models with slick ponytails with long belt-like ties. Our pony wig would

work perfectly. Try a shorter ribbon, with longer ends if you want a more wearable version of this style.

Rodarte’s models had sweet and youthful looking hair. Sequins and lace sewn on barrettes were randomly placed over textured loose hair. This textured style is one of our most commonly requested hair types. Wigs with textured hair will maintain a set longer than a style without texture and body. See our Riva and Atara wigs to copy similar styles.

In our last blog we talked about baby bangs as the fall latest trend. Freeda predicted this trend before models strutted down the runway during fashion week. As the trend now has haute couture approval it’s likely this hairstyle is one that will be sported by the fashion forward crowd. This style can be done on any of our wigs. Click here to shop our collection.

This trendy fringe was the choice of many designers this season. Seen below are the looks showcased by House of Holland, Mary Katrantzou and JW Anderson.

The beachy hair trend is still going strong, as well as the textured lobs and loosely pulled back buns. These classics will always shine on the runway and on the street. These versatile styles can be modified to make them your own.

Our Mimi is perfect for these styles, and its quick becoming a favorite among our customers. The Mimi has the texture, the loose waves and the length necessary to pull the hair into a bun. Shop our Mimi here.

Styling Q & A

Styling Q & A

Freeda Wigs recommends getting your wig washed, styled and maintained by a professional. There isn’t a substitute for all the training and skill a stylist has mastered. For those who don’t have that option these often asked questions might help you with your wig maintenance.

What shampoo and conditioner do recommend for washing the wigs?

Tressemé shampoo and conditioner is available in most drugstores and is a wonderful and inexpensive option.

We also like HSI Professional Smoothing Shampoo with Argan Oil as well as the conditioner. These shampoos and conditioners smell great, are sulfate free, and will leave the hair feeling soft and shiny.

How often should I wash my wig?

Washing the wig as infrequently as possible will help the wig last as long as possible. The standard answer is usually every 10-12 weeks, but everybody wears their wig differently so their needs will vary.

Washing, drying and styling the hair will add the most wear and tear on the wig. Wigs washed less often can last for years.

Can my wigs be colored?

Yes, virgin European hair colors beautifully. Highlights and unique color is one of the best ways to make the wig feel like “you”. We recommend testing a sample on the underside of the wig.

Advice your colorist to be careful with any conditioners used after the coloring. The conditioners used with dye are generally very strong. If any conditioner remains on the wig, it can cause the hair to slip inside the multi directional crown and create a pillow.

Can I use tools on my wig such as flat irons, blow-dryers, and curling irons?

Yes, since Freeda uses virgin European hair your wig can be styled with any tool you’d use on your own hair. Always spray the hair with a heat protector and use the tools carefully. Use the lowest settings whenever possible.

How many wigs do you recommend that each person has?

At Freeda we recommend purchasing at least two wigs. Your wig might need to be washed or repaired; relying on just one wig can cause stressful situations.

Further, alternating between wigs and giving them a “rest” between days will allow all the wigs to last longer.

Can I swim, do physical activity or sleep in my Freeda Wig?

You can. Sleeping, swimming and other activities will reduce the lifespan of your wig. Purchasing a tape fall or hat fall and designating it for activities with water involved is a good idea. You can comfortably sleep in your Freeda Wig. If you move around a lot at night it’s a good idea to purchase a pony wig or other wig that you can pull back or wear in a braid. You may want to keep this designated as your “bedtime wig”.

How should I store my wig?

It’s important to always store your wig on a wig head. Storing the wig on a wig head will help the wig hold its shape, and will prevent disasters (like our customer who burned a hole through her wig after storing it on a lamp).

When you store the wig never place the pins in the multi-directional, it causes tiny holes to form which weakens the material.

Enjoy your new wig! Don’t be scared to experiment and have fun with it.

How to maintain your hairstyle despite the humidity

How to maintain your hairstyle despite the humidity

Your hair was looking fab all winter and spring when all of a sudden your style falls flat, it lacks luster. What’s going on?

Likely its the humidity wrecking havoc in her wake. The high moisture in the air will cause your hair to frizz or will weigh it down. How can you carry your style with perfection throughout the day?

Make sure your wig is well moisturized. Dry hair will be more porous than moisturized hair, therefore it attracts more frizz. Summer is a good time for a deep conditioning treatment or a leave-in conditioner for your wig. The blow-dryer also dries out the tresses , so its best to air dry your hair or wig when possible.

When washing the wig always end with a cold water rinse. The cold water seals the cuticles so the moisture in the air can’t get in. This helps to explain why quality, expensive wigs frizz in the summer. Wigs of good quality ,specifically 100% virgin European hair will have the cuticle intact, the hair won’t be stripped or processed. It will react to the weather and light the same way your hair might.

Use a product with silicon in it. Rub a dime sized amount between your fingers and gently brush through the hair. Silicon will coat the strands of the hair , adding extra protection against the forces.

Once you start styling the hair try not to fight your hairs natural texture. Your blow-dry will last longer if you work with the hair then against it.  When you curl straight hair or straighten curly hair you are giving your hair more to work against.  Cutting layers into your wig also helps the blowout last longer. Hair that is one length weighs more and drags down your style. Layers help keep the weight off which lends itself to a hairstyle that lasts longer.

Wise Nuggets on How to Maintain Natural Hair Wigs

Natural Hair Wigs are must-have accessories for women suffering from hair loss. To derive maximum benefits from them, it is very important that you choose the right one. A professional hair stylist can help you make an informed decision. Here are some wise nuggets on how to maintain natural wigs without spending a fortune.

Be Gentle When Combing Natural Hair Wigs

Natural Hair WigsNatural wigs are made from delicate hair strands that need to be handled with great care. Hence, when combing it, desist from applying too much force or pressure as this can lead to breakage. Avoid using regular rough brushes and combs. In fact, the best don’t need to be combed every day, so let it rest and only comb when necessary.

Take It Off!

After a long day at work, take your natural hair wig off and place it on a wig stand. This stand is specifically tailored to retain its shape as evident from the design. This simple practice will also help to keep the hair fibers intact for many months to come. More importantly, stand should be placed in a clean area that is free from dust to keep the wig especially if you only wear it on a daily basis.

Washing Human Hair Wigs

It is highly recommendable to wash real hair wigs periodically in order to get rid of dust and other forms of debris. Still, you have to steer clear of shampoo meant for natural hair as they contain certain components that aggravate the rate at which strands are falling out. Instead, use normal conditioner. To effectively clean it, saturate it in water for a few minutes before squeezing to remove water. Never wring it as this can compromise the shape of its base. Professional hair stylists’ advice clients to only wash their wig after wearing it for 25 times. Washing it on a daily or weekly basis can make it look less realistic.

Drying Natural Hair Wigs

Silicon Hair Magic Drops & Vitamin SerumMost people are tempted to dry their hair wigs by shaking them in a towel. However, this is not recommendable as it can affect the hair strands. Instead, take time to dry each piece at a time, meticulously, using a soft towel. Also, avoid styling it when wet as this can damage fibers and compromise its appearance.

Conditioning Human Hair Wigs

Use a quality conditioner to keep it looking great and elegant. Apply the conditioner every two or three weeks depending on the number of times that you wear it. Be sure to rinse it completely to prevent the conditioner building up inside the wig.

The Freeda Silicon Hair Magic Drops & Vitamin Serum is also an excellent lotion that you can use on a daily basis, and that will add a beautiful look and shine to your Natural Hair Wig. Furthermore, our silicon and vitamin based serum ensures strength and durability, while giving the hair a healthy look without adding any greasy residues to it.

Washing and Drying for Our Sheitels

real human hair wigsPreviously, we detailed the selection of quality hair for our world renowned real human hair wigs. Once our expert buyers have made their decisions, our hair technicians take over and begin the crafting process.

The various hair tresses are thoroughly washed and cleaned with a series of shampoos, conditioners, and other cleansers. The cleaning is designed to remove dirt, oil, and other particles that cling to the hairs. The process is laborious, as considerable care must be taken to ensure all the hair cuticles remain intact and face in the same direction.

Some wig makers process the hair to remove the cuticles, thus making the cleaning process simpler. However, stripping the cuticles increases the possibility of tangling and matting, so the quality is considerable lowered.

After the tresses have been thoroughly cleaned, we dry them carefully. Drying is a complex process as well. Poor ventilation can cause the hair to dry improperly and develop a peculiar smell. Using heaters for drying can have a similar effect. Therefore, our experts prefer to air dry the hair, allowing it to settle into a natural state.

The process of washing and drying the the hair is painstaking and rigorous, but it allows us to be confident that the cleaned hair will be suitable for use in creating our famous sheitels.
